Should I quit my job and dive into my own consulting?

An all-time classic: "Should I quit my job and dive into my own consulting biz?" Before you jump, let me share a few thoughts.

I’ve seen dozens of smart people who quit their jobs, thinking they’ll make it big in consulting. And then… silence. No clients. No cash. Just heartbreak and a dead LLC.
Why do I see so many? Here’s why:
🍿Global budget cuts are hitting external consultants first.
🍿The consulting market is oversaturated. Everywhere. If you know a market where it's not, please share.
🍿People who depended on a secure paycheck, now are exposed to a much higher risk. For some - this is literally a costly neural rewiring. They get anxious and quit.
🍿You are what the corporate ecosystem provided to you before: accounting, marketing, communications, and the list goes on. It's ALL on you and only you, even if you delegate.

Still thinking of launching your own consulting? Cool. But test the idea first — with math, not hope. Here is my consulting test formula before quitting your job:

1. Build a consulting product.
2. Sell it. Not to your friends — get three real paid clients. Cold leads that you worked on yourself.
3. Track your time: sales + delivery hours
4. Calculate:
Total earnings ÷ hours worked = hourly rate. Multiply by 1.5 (sales will slow down later). Multiply by hours/month you can realistically work. That’s your potential monthly income.
Does it cover your life expenses? Go for it. If not? Stay in the job. Rethink. Re-strategize.

Please share this with anyone flirting with freelance consulting. We might save a few careers — and (family) bank accounts.

P.S. I’m all for brave jumps. I deeply value courage. And please, before you quit and plunge into consulting… make sure there’s water below.
